A friend of mine in another country far away, turned into work one day.

He is an extraordinary and talented and a brilliant clinician, who provides work to a standard that I could only ever dream of.

He has built a practice in his home city where he is respected by his colleagues and by patients and has provided referrals in order to provide the best possible treatment that he can provide, and he continues to grow and become more and more successful, even though he is still in his mid-thirties.

In the practice that he has built, he's tried to create a brand and a sense of belonging. He's tried to create a consistent experience for patients, and part of that would be the uniform that his team wear and that he wears so that people can identify who's who and feel part of the whole process that is carried out.

He recounted a story to me though, recently. About a young member of the team that had recently joined. Who refused to wear the uniform, the way that it was intended and would cover up the top half with a hoodie covered in dog hair.

He turned out to reception one day early in the day, and that individual was sat at reception with their hood up, so they didn't have to look at patients directly in the face.

He's a kind individual, talented, gifted with emotional intelligence but he was confused, and so he took the young individual aside and said, “It's really important in inverted commas that you adhere to the uniform code that we have so that we all look the same”.

The person in question answered by saying “Who gave you the right to tell me what to do?!”

It's a good question, isn't it?

Leadership is complicated. Intergenerational leadership, way, way more complicated than any other type.

‘How do we inspire ourselves to greatness when nothing else will do?’

‘How do we inspire others to greatness?’

Tough question.

Tougher action.
