Dr Joe Average

In a previous blog post, I explained Dr Andre Schroeder's philosophy of selecting a new product.

As his philosophy was recounted to me (and the rest of the audience) at the University or Bern in the Andre Schroeder auditorium by Danny Buser, he also told us about Schroeder's philosophy on the average dentist.

Andre Schroeder firmly believed that Dr Joe Average is below average. If you have a conversation on this philosophy with dentists who accept referrals, particularly in NHS services, they would confirm that belief 100% of the time.

This is important to understand and I think particularly important to understand for dental supply companies and people who supply materials and techniques related to dentists.

In the early and formative years of the Straumann dental implant system (Then called the ITI dental implant system) laboratories would not be supplied with components to restore implant restorations unless they passed a test piece yearly. This had been designed specifically by Schroeder who felt it was almost impossible for him to police the clinical skills of the dentist so he attempted to do it through the laboratories (it was Andre Schroeder who invited the ITI dental implant system)

This was indeed a clever move, albeit falling slightly short of the mark but it persisted in the UK for many years and infact the laboratory testing procedures were headed up by Larry Browne.

In a hugely competitive commercial work this has fallen away but we are moving back to a situation where some sort of clinical policing needs to be put into place and people need to be held more accountable for the procedures they carry out.
