Tomorrow (10th April) I will speaking on the Main Stage at The British Dental Conference.
Without a shadow of a doubt, this is the biggest gig I have ever had. They are estimating that there will be about 1,000 people in the auditorium.
I have been asked to speak on the subject of "Are you and your team ready for problems with implants in the next 10 years?" which is a subject I have wrestled with over the past few months in the lead upto the lecture.
As usual, the final presentation won't be finished until I actually see it. The slides won't be finished until the train to Manchester tomorrow morning. This is the only way I can work because presentations like this can only come from how I feel as I stand infront of the audience and give my thoughts.
Essentially, I believe problems will come from poor implant positioning, post-surgical complications, peri-implantitis and restoration fracture.
I will discuss all these topics over an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes but at the end of the lecture, the most important thing I will discuss is 'Prethics'.
The biggest single factor which causes problems in Implant Dentistry are the dentists chasing the cash and being worried that they will miss out on the next big thing.
To present to 1,000 people at The British Dental Conference, those thoughts and philosophies is either very brave... or very stupid and as I write this post, I am entirely unsure as to which one it is. I suspect this is the one chance I will get for an audience this big and I am pretty sure I won't be asked back. For those reasons and those reasons alone, it is really important that I am honest, authentic and say exactly what I think.
Sandwiched in tomorrow's programme between 3 high level academic Professors, surely someone at the BDA must have realised who they were booking and what he was likely to say... surely?
