Attention inflation and the death of Facebook

In his brilliant book Out of Our Minds, Ken Robinson explains the theory of academic inflation and the disruptive nature of this.

I have been wondering about Facebook a lot recently as my boredom and frustration with the platform increases and increases to the point where I was shown recently the 'dental gym' page which seems to be somewhere that dentists post selfies of themselves and their six packs. At which point I though "Am I really looking at this?"

Attention inflation would then be defined as the fact that you require to do increasingly ridiculous and outrageous things to become notice and this is exactly what has happened to Facebook. The background noise is so great now that to stand out from the crowd is almost impossible and what has to be done has to be outrageous.

Over the coming months we will be introducing an email subscription to this blog in the hope we will be able to see the people that are actually interested in reading it. If it turns out that nobody is, that's no problem, I will continue to write my diary in the same sort of way and nobody else will see it because there is no point in blogging publicly if nobody reads it. I think it is time for me to withdraw from Facebook to a greater and greater degree.

It will probably lead to more harmony at home and i'm sure that's the case in many houses.
