'the AI' as in "Is that the AI?" is what I hear almost everywhere I go.
From the earlier blogs, you'll see that I've just this week returned from the Bupa Dental Conference - dental health is....live, which was an amazing and eye-opening experience for me.
I went in with quite a few hesitations and caveats about corporate dentistry, came out, transformed and enthused by an organisation that really does seem to be trying its best to make things a bit better, but all of the talk, or a lot of the talk was about the future of technology and in particular how AI can impact on our industry.
And so, here we are at the crossroads of yet another technological revolution, 25 minutes after the last one, after a world was upended by the internet, by email, by the integration into social media and the devastating effects that has had on our whole society, including our economics, our politics, the creation of our new technological oligarchs, all of that type of thing.
Before we're even over that, or have any chance to catch our breath and adjust to the changes that it's made to us and our children, AI has arrived.
It is transformational and in ways that only the very well-integrated and cleverest people can completely understand.
AI is not clever because it can write you a 500-page document about Bupa so that you can turn up and know more about Bupa than you ever knew before without really doing any research; it's not really clever because it can write your PE coursework for A-Level in about 15 minutes without you having to lift a finger, it's clever because it can code and understand and never sleep and learn at the speed of light.
And so, already, the only weapon we have against this is our humanity.
And so I was able to turn up at the Bupa Dental Conference with my carefully stowed away 500-word summary of the history, aspirations and financial performance of Bupa (the group, not dental) but then the similar document which introduced all the senior leadership team, the strategy and the performance of Bupa Dental and tucked that into my pocket on my phone.
But it's not enough to spew that out; it's not clever to do that; it's the insight you have, the ability to deliver your opinion, your humanity, your integrity, your empathy; that's the thing that we will have that's different to AI at least for the time being.
There is no question that 'the AI' could have produced a presentation that I delivered on the stage on Saturday morning, but I couldn't have done it as a human being yet, and for all the use that it has and the terror that it might strike, and the opportunities that it may create, it will still be a while before it has that so why don't we concentrate on that?
