A Place at the table

A couple of times in the last week or so, I've been to practices or groups of dentists who are not existing quite in the same space as we are at the clinic.

Everyone agreed that in these places that I was at, because they can see where we are and how far forward, we are in terms of technological advancement, team development, facilities and all that kind of thing.

This is not a boast in any way, and it's not flexing on what we do or where we are. But for a long time, we have had the attitude as a whole team of moving things forward as fast as we can to provide the best possible care that we can, both for the people who come for treatment and the people who come for education.

Next week, though, the tables get flipped and turned because I've been invited to lecture at the Straumann Esthetic Days Conference.

This is Straumann's major global event that they invite people from all over the world (and usually pay for them to attend). It has about 1500 delegates and an extraordinary technical expo, together with some of the biggest lectures in implant dentistry in the world, or at least in my world.

It also encompasses the Straumann’s clear correct business, so there is a big alignment element to the congress as well, and it is beautiful and fantastic this year in Vilamoura in Portugal. The previous two years, it was in Majorca, and actually last year I was invited to go ( not to speak), and we tied it in with a cycle trip. It's that type of thing.

This time, though, I'm speaking on marketing. It's called attracting and retaining high-value patients, and it's in a room set for 1500 (although it will probably be half full).

It's a pretty big gig for me, not the biggest, but one of the biggest and on a subject that we're passionate about, and I think we're actually quite far ahead on because lots of people are scattered in their view of marketing and what it looks like.

I think we've earned our place at that table now, but we are secondary guests at the moment. Many people are sitting in a much larger environment with much more experience and having been there many more times.

Interested to see what it feels like or how it's received, all of these things are a job interview after all. It may be a one-off that I never get the chance to do again, but it may be the start of something else.
