A gift to your future self

Sometimes, I get a little bit sad in October or November.

It's happened to me many times before; nothing serious, nothing terrible, just a bit flat, a bit low, maybe a little bit uninspired because summer is over all the nice long bike rides in the sunshine, taking the dogs out with not too many layers on, not having to dry their paws when we come back, less mud, less rubbish.

Things have ramped up in September, too; work is much more full on after the nice, relaxed, chilled-out time you generally have in the middle of July to the end of August because many people are off on school holidays.

The boy's football starts again, so that takes up more time, so I end up standing on a pissing wet Astroturf on a Thursday night trying to keep control of 16-year-olds, etc etc etc.

What I did (unwittingly) to counter this when it comes is I gave myself a gift years ago for my future self for myself now.

I started to write a diary.

You should, too.

Writing in a diary is a gift to your future self, especially about the times that are tougher or harder because it shows you that it's not forever, it shows you that it will be ok in a minute, it shows you that you've been here before, navigated it and can move along.

It's completely and utterly unrealistic and deluded to think that you go through life feeling happy and contented and fulfilled and inspired and in love for every single minute of every single day (It'll be far, far, far less than that).

Understanding that you felt like this before, and it's ok, and that's the way it goes sometimes, and you'll be ok in a minute is one of the most beautiful and kindest gifts you can give to yourself.

 Start writing it today, maybe.
