What collaboration looks like

Here is a photo of last Wednesday’s MDT (Multi-Disciplinary Team) Meeting at The Campbell Clinic.

You’ll see Andy, Nish, Bea (she comes in on a Wednesday even though she doesn’t work here that day) Nic, our TCO, Louise, our Senior Nurse, Mark our Technician and me.

We talk about cases, ones that are beginning, ones that are finishing, ones that are halfway through. We talk about successes and we talk about problems.

We hold each other to account. We jointly plan things. We put our names together in case notes to show that we’ve thought about it.

Some cases come back four or five times.

There was one case on Wednesday that has been discussed at least five times because of its complexity and the way it’s moving.

This MDT team also has access to Charlotte Stilwell as our Restorative Specialist, Andrew Flett as our Orthodontic Specialist, Rajan Nansi as our Periodontology Specialist, David Cohen as our Endodontic Specialist, Paul Lyons with an interest in Endodontics, Maria Fernandez with an interest in CEREC and digital dentistry.

That’s what collaboration looks like. I cannot count the times I have taken a case to MDT only to have the treatment plan changed by a group of clinicians who thought more reasonably, ethically, honestly or just better than I had about it because I was on my own.

For selected people and people who work with the clinic we have access to the group. They send cases we discussed them and send advice back. It’s a model I would like to see other people adopt. A model of sharing and collaboration, and moving towards better. It has to be a good system and it has to be something we can use.

It’s also great though!

It’s fun, sometimes even ridiculous and is just one of the best parts of the week.
