Values over information

Over the past few years I have shut down so many channels of inbound information and yet still the stream is overwhelming at times.

I decided to try to stick to what I believed in, instead of time and time again being influenced by external (fear of missing out) stimuli which pulled me in the wrong direction.

I do feel that for the past several years, we as a team have managed to push in that direction, based around a vision of how we want to achieve things and not be overly influenced from external factors.

Of late though, I have found myself being sucked back into the torrent of conflicting views and shouting that is the stream of information.

There were many things I decided not to engage with (Facebook not the least of them) but also functions within dentistry that I had been invited to and groups that I was asked to meet with.

Recently I started to give myself a hard time because I’d decided not to attend a gathering of my ‘peers’ and in the lead up to that I tortured myself because I thought I was getting it wrong.

I had a text conversation with one of my friends who was at that meeting only for it to completely and utterly confirm why I had stopped going to these things in the first place.

There was a reason that I stopped attending these things (certainly I stopped attending them frequently) and the reason was values.

Some of the trips were good but in general the experiences were against my values and that’s an important lesson to learn, but an even harder one to stick by.

Sometimes I guess it’s important to test whether your values are pointing in the right direction. On this occasion I was really glad that someone else was able to test it for me.

Back once again to redouble my efforts… value planning.
