Thinking of job interviews – part 1

Colin Campbell

From time to time (and sometimes more than time to time), people approach me and recommend something I should write about in the blog.

For the avoidance of doubt, that is always welcome because finding the inspiration to blog seven days a week, 365 is sometimes challenging, as I'm sure you can understand.

And so, recently, a young person who is way too young and way too clever and whose prospects are so good that they should not be paying any attention to the garbage that I'm writing came forwards with a recommendation of something that I would think about putting out.

What they wanted was why people ask the question in interviews, "If you were a superhero, which one would you be."

My first thought was that I'd never been asked that in an interview, and then I reminded myself that I've not had an interview since 1996.

And then I realised that when you have many people in front of you in an interview process, you're always trying to dig in to see who they are, what flicks their switch, and what makes them tick.

Finding out if someone is genuine or honest or motivated or ethical or empathic, or alive is what an interview is all about. Of course, you need to know whether they have the skills to do the job or are prepared to develop that, but it's much more than that.

These type of questions helps open the door to giving you an insight into who the person might be.

That's probably why they use that question, and if it's being used often, I think people have now seen somewhere on a YouTube video or a blog about recruitment that this is an excellent way to unlock the door.

In truth, any question like that is a great way to unlock the door because when you turn up for a job interview, you should be there to have your door unlocked, and you have a short period of time in which to show the people who you are and what you can give.

But just while we are at this and playing this game, the person who asked me to talk about this, write about it, or think about it also asked which superhero I would be if I were asked the question.

The answer to that question should be instinctive, and it should come to you within a few seconds of being asked the question, and when I read it, it did to me.

I would be Captain Fantastic, and if you don't know who Captain Fantastic is, here's the trailer for the movie here.

The reason I would be Captain Fantastic is because, first of all, he isn't a superhero. After all, there is no such thing as a superhero.

And secondly, amid that story, and as it twists and tangles and weaves to its conclusion, the most important thing is that all he's trying to do is manage and manage the life and the situation that he finds himself in.

He has made some choices, and he has to live with those choices, and he has to try to do his best for his Children.

It is the most extraordinary movie, and I've written about it in these pages so many times, but that's who I would be if I had a choice.

I would want to be the guy who was prepared to struggle through the ups and downs of life and through the difficulties of raising children and keeping a family together when the external pressures seem to want to blow it apart.

It's also Viggo Mortensen, and he was Aragorn in Lord of the Rings, so who wouldn't want to be him?

I hope that answers it and gives you a few thoughts.

HT to Lily, thanks so much for going to Scotland and trying to take over the world and for the recommendation.

P.S. If you want to recommend, hit reply (we can't promise we'll answer everyone, but we'll try).
