Things of significance

The things that we choose to keep close by and collect throughout our lives define our modern existence.

In my office there is a picture and a certificate in a frame.

The picture is of Leonard Heath and the certificate is where Leonard was mentioned in despatches for bravery in the first world war by Field Marshal Haig, it is signed by the Minister for War, Winston Churchill.

Leonard Heath was my wife’s great grandfather and countless times that picture has inspired me, to better and to greater things, by giving me perspective and so I keep it close by.

My office at work is an amazing inspirational little cave for me and pretty much everything in it is designed like the picture of Leonard.

Surprisingly though, if the practice was on fire it’s very unlikely that Leonard would be saved.

At times I’m amazed to watch what people collect as things of significance.

They seem never to be tested for what they would keep if the worst came to the worst.

It’s altogether fine to spend all of your waking hours working to buy a shiny new car but it’s pretty ridiculous if doing that causes you to lose your marriage.

Everything we collect pushes something else off the other end of the shelf.

Selecting what we collect and what is most important is a real trick.
