Last week I had the joy and privilege of watching young Louis Dunne become the U20’s middle distance triathlon champion in Europe.
In truth though, it was one of the worst preparations for any race I’ve seen him have.
I’m sure that should really be all credit to him for getting the result in the circumstances that were so difficult and I could list the problems that he had and the bad luck that he encountered and how that could have made him spiral into a position where he didn’t even turn up.
Through that process in trying to think of things to say to someone when things are going so badly wrong, I realised that in order to have the best race preparation you’ve ever had you probably have to have some bad ones.
By the time Louis’s done 100 middle distance triathlons (and I guess that won’t be that long) there will be one that was the best and there will be one that was the worst and there will be many in-between.
Maybe better to get a bad one out the way early.
