In his extraordinary book Talking to Strangers, Malcolm Gladwell explains the concept of ‘default to trust’.
Humans are hardwired to trust which is why, on rare occasions, really terrible people can get away with really terrible things.
But our ability to maintain this situation is being eroded all the time.
Politicians are almost impossible to trust, their manifestos cast aside despite their mandate coming from the whole population.
Banks, large organisations and the customer service of almost anyone we deal with makes it seem that everyone is against us and no one is for us.
When things go wrong people avoid or lie or simply ignore.
Nobody, it seems, is concerned that we’re burning our planet to death.
And in this darkness in these difficult times so trust shines out like a beacon.
Trust is a foundation for everything and every relation and interaction that we have.
It’s long in the building and quick in the destroying but to have it and to protect it and to care for it is to be someone who has something very special indeed.
It forms the relationship with our partners, with our children, with our colleagues, with our friends and with our greater society.
If you’re at a loss today for what to do, just do something that produces trust in someone else.
