The growth of Ed Sheeran

In July this year, I’m going to see Ed Sheeran, to a stadium type concert gig again.

I do like going to Ed Sheeran concerts, but I generally go for Alison’s benefit because she loves it.

I’ve seen him in Nottingham, the 02 arena in London, twice at Wembley, and now at Roundhay park in Leeds, and its different now.

The first time I saw him, was at his arena tour of 8000ish arenas around the United Kingdom, when he had just broken through.

It was Halloween and he was dressed as chucky, I didn’t know much about him then, and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

He was disarming and brilliant and so humble and down to earth, it was amazing.

He loved it.

Things have changed since he became a £160 million concert sensation around the world, a factory for hits and that is a problem, isn’t it? At least for some people.

It’s interesting to measure this up against my business (which is unlikely at any time soon going to be a £160 million business), but as you get bigger, you just cannot take everyone with you.

You won’t please all the ones you looked after at the start, because one of the things they liked was that it was the start.

You won’t keep all the staff you have at the start, because they might not like it when the business gets bigger, they might like it in a smaller business at the start, you’ll decide you want to chance and influence more people and to tell your story over a wider platform, but that won’t fit everybody, and they’ll say that “you sold out “or that “you’ve changed” or “it wasn’t like that then.”

It moves ahead and you can’t help it, if you do it right and look after people properly, you will get better and therefore you will get bigger and that will bring with it, challenges of trying to stay the same as you were before.

If you stay the same as you were before for the people you had at the start, then you’ll die, because some of them will leave and as you’re bringing new people in, they won’t like the way it was at the start, remember that the people who were supporting you at the start, changed too and their requirements change and alter and you can’t please everybody all the time.

I’m taking the kids to see Ed Sheeran again and it’ll be a great day out, but I have to accept him for something else now, because the guy who reeled against the labels and created his own fame, so that he could then sell it back to the establishment, is now the establishment.
