Recently Simon (my bike coach and I) have been discussing the 80:20 rule quite a lot.
It’s something that’s been talked about much in endurance training with a lot of examples from guys who have achieved a lot of success based on this.
Fundamentally it means that 80% of your training is done really steady without killing you, without being an alpha male, without racing.
The other 20% are done ridiculously hard and this improves the top end of your engine.
It takes a lot of discipline this and a lot of faith, but when you’re riding out and not hurting yourself it is actually having a positive effect.
For the second half of this year I have pretty much stuck by this and the big test will come in a few weeks’ time.
But funnily enough, it is a much more enjoyable way to train (as far as I’m concerned because I am not 16 anymore).
I think it applies back to my work as well. I think 80% of the time I need to be doing the jobs to the best of my ability and the 20% of the time I need to be excited.
