Revisiting the timeline

Previously in these pages, I explained that one of the best ways to assess your values and ideals is to use what I call the John Gibson timeline.

This was taught to me in a leadership session by my friend, mentor, coach, and inspiration John Gibson, who was one of the biggest shining lights in the early part of my career.

John suggests in order to value check that, you take a piece of A4 paper and turn it landscape, draw a diagonal line from bottom left to top right, and put the date of your birth on the bottom left and the date of today on your top right. Put a line down the middle to mark the midpoint of those years, and then start to draw lines on them for significant things that happened in your life.

Take your time to do this, have a coffee, sit outside in the sun, just get really down deep into what is important and once you finish it or have done as much as you think you can, then look at the things you've written down and group them into categories.

This is what matters to you.

This is what your life is.

As Marcus Mumford says, "Where you invest your love. You invest your life."

The question for today, though, because I've told you the above before in the blog, is, it's what line have you added recently that adds to your values?

Have you added any line in there where you would say, "That was a brilliant thing that I had, did, got"?

If you haven't put anything on the line recently, it's time to stop and to reassess and then start to add some lines.
