I have friends who would never listen to anything that was played on Radio 1 because they’re prejudice.
Some people think that the only thing that can be cool is the thing that no one else knows about and they refuse to accept that so many people gravitate towards something because it is so beautiful.
Many times, in these pages over the past few years I've expressed my guilty pleasure for Taylor Swift and the work that she's done (Miley Cyrus too) but just of late I’ve become utterly transfixed by Anti-hero by Taylor Swift and the lyrics.
Bizarrely when I'm riding my bike in the shed, I can imagine myself singing the song to my wife from a stage where our friends are surrounded as some sort of prank at our 75th wedding anniversary, as the tears roll down my face in an apology for how hard it must be to live with me at times.
I do have insight into that, but Taylor Swift's lyrics give me more insight into that.
Lewis Capaldi is another.
It doesn't matter what Capaldi looks like or whether he's had a girlfriend or not in his life, for some reason he is able to tap into emotions that some of us don't even talk about but of course, in order to understand that and to understand Taylor Swift, you have to hear, not just listen.
Previously in this blog, I wrote about Kaci Bolls, a country music artist that I'd never heard of and was shamed into my ignorance by Mrs Hayley Brown, our managing director, who is fully aware.
Kaci Bolls’ ‘Somebody’s something’ is one of the most beautiful tracks you'll ever hear, particularly if you understand the back story of what it’s to do with.
In a completely unrelated but totally related slant, Kippers balloon is the most beautiful Children's book that's ever been written (in my humble opinion) but of course it's not a Children's book, it's just a book.
There's no such thing as pop music, there's only music.
When you can cast off your prejudice in anything (clearly this is a metaphor for other things), when you stop applying labels to things, it's much easier to see the good and so much easier to see the beauty.
Here is the acoustic version of Anti-hero on YouTube.
Here is Lewis Capaldi's latest offering on YouTube.
Here is Kaci Bolls.
“Did you hear my covert narcissism I disguise as altruism
Like some kind of congressman? (Tale as old as time)
I wake up screaming from dreaming
One day I’ll watch as you’re leaving
And life will lose all its meaning
(For the last time)”
