Pitch side economics

Last Friday night Callum played football with one of the other club teams because our training was cancelled.

I got to stand pitch side as one of the dad’s chatting to a parent who works in the motor industry.

They’re actually a patient of mine too and has a business that runs events in the motor trade including motor shows, promotional events, etc.

It started by quietly discussing whether their business was ok at the moment.

They had noticed a significant slow down and people were delaying things, pushing back until next year or cancelling contracts all together.

They were asking me if the weather was affecting our business and how it had affected things when we moved to the new practice.

Immediately following on from that, they said that they were going to push back the treatment they were supposed to have with me, just for a little while as their business was a bit slow.

There it is, there is the secret recession.

I am not buying a new car and therefor, the guys who are selling new cars are pulling back on their business, therefor they're pulling back on my business.

This has been repeated a thousand times over and in our business, a million times over round the country.

There is no question that people are more careful accessing their private dentistry, certainly in our area.

One thing that seems to have happened though following the last time that this happened in 2009, is that nobody wants to talk about it.

It is like if you don’t say it, it’s not true and you can just carry on and you will be protected.

I think that this is a symptom of social media and everyone’s inability now to tell the truth to the public.

We had a long discussion about this pitch side last Friday, it was really quite therapeutic and we talked about how we knew that taxi drivers were suffering and barbers were suffering and that was the worst Christmas for 25 years in the shops etc., etc., etc.

Interesting though, that we're not in recession as far as the government tell us with the figures that come out, that everything is rosy and great.

I don’t believe that and I think we’re in for a rough couple of years as people have less to spend on what essentially is a luxury item.

It is a confidence thing isn’t it? But despite the long conversations pitch side, neither of us could find confidence.
