Sometimes the problem with being a “speaker” is that you forget the time to be a “listener”.
I go to lots of conferences and lots of meetings, it’s been a privilege over the past 5 to 10 years to speak at many, In what ever role, sometimes the lowest in the room with 2 or 3 people, sometimes on the big stage.
Problem is when you go to those, you’re distract the job that you have to do and the people who you work for and you can’t be selfish and be yourself.
A while ago when I was writing my PDP (yes, I did do this and did it seriously) I decided to go to Osteology in Barcelona at the end of April.
Never touched this conference before, it’s usually in Monaco, it’s effectively the Geistlich world congress for oral rehabilitation for implant surgeons and periodontologist’s.
It’s nothing short of utterly remarkable.
Without any shadow of a doubt, Osteology - Barcelona was the best conference I have ever been to of any type, and there is no question I’ll be at the next one, probably in Monaco. (in 3 years’, time).
Why is it so good? Its so good because its specific to me, it’s about oral rehabilitation and reconstruction using bone grafting, soft tissue grafting and all of the things that go with that. Some of the stuff is more for a perio' guy than for me (I don’t do recession closure defects) but there is so much content and so much to get through, so many ideas.
It turned out I knew a lot of people there that I didn’t expect, but the most wonderful part of it was going with Colin Burns and John Sadler, and I will write more about them in a little while.
I met people that are new friends, I met people that were old friends and some other guys that I had met in China, and some other guys that are from other countries that I might get to go to, if I’m really lucky.
Best of still though, we stayed on a boat in Diagonal Harbour in Barcelona about 5 minutes from the conference centre, and I admit it was a little bit rough and rowdy, it was super cool and I will never forget sitting on the back deck of the boat until 2 o’clock in the morning drinking beer and talking philosophy with Colin Burns and John Sadler.
Heads up and look out if you are seriously interested in being good at oral reconstruction and watch out for Osteology.
