On Monday I became the widget man again

A couple of weeks ago on Monday I was working at home in the shed and I got a phone call.

There was a patient in the chair at work who was having quite a complicated implant procedure by one of my colleagues.

While all patients should be exactly the same and treated exactly the same, this patient is known to me although we have never met.

The individual is an extremely high-level ranking individual in an extremely large global corporation and their partner is a consultant surgeon of some renown.

And so, the patient ends up with a problem well into the complex procedure and no one else is able to fix it, it seems.

I get a call and I get in the car and I concept the problem out between my house and the practice.

I have a possible solution for the problem although it may not be effective because I haven’t seen it in the flesh.

In the end I go in and my solution to the problem works in approximately 60 seconds.

My colleague is relieved, and the patient is delighted.

Whilst that is not a chargeable skill, it goes beyond the value of pounds and pence.

I had the ‘time insurance’ to be able to try something which might not work and lead to a further complication knowing that I could explain my actions from experiences that I’ve had previously.

I was always told when I was a trainee “you only get trusted with grey hair”.

God knows I have enough of that.
