At the start of May, and perhaps for the last time for a while, I will be speaking at the Digital Symposium in London and this is the fourth year in a row i’ve been asked to do that which is a real privilege.
The Digital Symposium started, as far as I could see, as the CEREC Symposium at the Royal College of Physician’s and two years of chatting about digital there, in the very early stages of our odyssey led to an introduction to speak last year on the main stage with Craig Parker.
This year I’ll be speaking with Jameel Gardee on the Friday and the Saturday. We’re trying to do something a little bit different- something that hasn’t really been seen before – a digital presentation of a case and then taken right through to surgery. We’d hope to do the surgery live, linked from the practice, but logistically it was just too difficult and risky so the surgery will be recorded here in the next couple of weeks and edited down to make sure it’s user friendly for the Saturday morning. I can tell you that it’s not an easy case.
Where it would be really straightforward to provide an upper pre-molar with loads of bone and show guided surgery, that’s not the cases I see in the practice and in fact it would almost be difficult for me to find one. This is a high-end upper aesthetic case for someone whose expectations are extremely high and it shows how trying to master the digital platform allows you to make decision about the patient treatment in advance which will make the outcomes better. The case itself will be taken through surgery, through diagnostics and digital planning and the surgery video will be dissected on the Saturday morning to show everyone how guided surgery can be brought into their practice, even if you haven’t got the facility to buy the expensive bits of kit required.
Digital implant planning and guided surgery can come into a practice for someone who doesn’t have a CT scanner or an intra oral scanner as all of this stuff can be outsourced to other providers. It does give you the opportunity though to assess a case in so much more detail than would ever be possible and that must be better for patients and Jameel and I hope to provide this to the guys who come to the symposium in May.
Restoratively the case will not be completed but we’ll be showing updates on The Campbell Academy Facebook page of the case as it progresses to it’s final stages and we’ll be able to present it later.
The details of the event are here. The setting is fantastic. Last year there was a real buzz about the whole event and it’s an opportunity to see loads of different aspects of digital dentistry. Everybody does know that this is the future, it’s where everything is going and it’s a great opportunity to see it in London on your doorstep.
