The technical aspect of placing a dental implant used to be a little bit of a myth and now the knowledge of how to do it is everywhere and available to everyone.

The same applies to crown preps or denture construction or any other technical aspect of dentistry.

It means they’re available to practise all of these things before you go to a patient, you can buy all of that online and practise as much as you want until you feel comfortable.

There are countless amounts of courses online and face-to-face to allow you to get better at these systems and techniques.

So, let’s assume everyone can learn how to do anything so why is everyone not equally as good.

The main differentiator in healthcare (and this will become more and more important) is the ability to make the right decision.

It used to be the diagnosis was 1% and operative treatment 99% but the shift in the opposite direction is enormous and it’s why the people who spend the longest time with new patients have the most fulfilling and satisfying and, I would suggest, highest quality careers.

Everyone knows that proper preparation prevents p*ss poor performance, it’s just that few of us actually apply that adage to our work.

Make your mistakes in advance of treating your patients and you will have much happier patients, a much happier practice and a much less stressful life.
