Competence is a dangerous place, in the middle of the bell curve just in the safety zone.
In truth it is a prison that holds us back from better and greater things. It’s a dangerous concept though.
Things that will work, that are proven to work are safe, secure and comfortable but they do not promote innovation, improvement and development.
The flip side of that coin though is development for development sake or worse development for commercial advantage.
This is a very difficult circle to square.
On the one hand, in healthcare, we seek competence as a baseline for our individual profession. That is right and proper.
On the other hand though we have a moral obligation to try to improve the health of patients and the outcome of procedures.
There are many (companies and individuals) who will use this model imperative for their own commercial needs and desires, pushing forwards a product or a technique to make them more famous, wealthy or both. We must find a way of embracing innovation and not accepting competence as the gold standard, but only as a baseline, as a safety area from which we can propel ourselves to greater heights. Improvement through measurement of new techniques and honesty, share the values, but at all times have the patients best interest at heart.
