Hunting for good news

Are you doing this?

For weeks now have you been opening up whatever your preferred news feed is (BBC news etc.) and trying to seek out the story that makes you feel better?

Fine if that's your strategy but this is a common phenomenon known as confirmation bias.

You will, of course, try to disregard the bad news and seek out only the good news.

What happens when you can’t find the good news that you want?

The news media is designed not to give too much good news because it doesn’t bring people back.

Imagine the situation where you went onto BBC news and the news was all good.

That would be terrible.

You would be able to get on with your life without spending ages on the news App.

The bias there is to sensationalise (to whatever degree depending upon your channel) to bring you back again to look for the good news which is only there in tiny snapshots.

Best that you find a way of objectively looking at the information to allow you to make decisions based on the facts.

Hans Rosling taught the whole world about this in Factfulness.

Everybody's view of the world is darker than the world actually is and that’s because the news media is designed to provide that.

If you’re looking for good news on a day-to-day basis you might be better looking in a different place.
