Face to face

I have not quite finished Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport, a recommendation to me from Alex Jones.

I did study in some detail his previous book, Deep Work and it is a marvellous piece of work.

Digital Minimalism is even more profound than that.

The most gratifying thing for me on reading Digital Minimalism is that I adopted much of the strategies related to this book before I read the book and before I realised anyone else was adopting these strategies.

It is certainly a book for weirdos who don’t have any intention of conforming to the new rules of society.

One of the most fundamental messages thoughout Digital Minimalism, is the damage that we're causing through the lack of face to face communication in the digital age.

It is now becoming abundantly clear that the social media explosion, is this generation is equivalent to smoking.

We know that initially when smoking first hit the streets, doctors were prescribing or recommending cigarettes to “clear the lungs” it was fashionable and everyone who is anyone would be seen smoking.

Compare that to now.

Even in the 1980's and 90's when we knew the damage smoking was causing, we did nothing or almost nothing to limit the possibility of it filtering through society to the very youngest.

We had Formula 1 cars plastered in cigarette advertisement's and so many other places too.

Ultimately, we got a handle on this when we were certain of the damages that it caused and look at a packet of cigarettes now!

If someone was to light up a cigarette next to you in a restaurant, all hell would break loose.

Phone usage will go the same way.

It seems pretty clear now and more and more research is being released to show this, that we are damaging our children with the use of our smart phone’s and in particular social media.

The anxiety that social media causes to so many people is cause enough for it to be looked at in detail, but the longer term effects that is damaging the ability of children to communicate is horrendous.

Digital Minimalism offers a flexible alternative to this, but only for people who are actually prepared to work at it.

It would be essential to go cold turkey like I did in my first sabbatical. I had 6 weeks with no digital device.

It is only on returning back into society after that kind of time away that the curtain has risen and the damage is clear and visible.

3 years on from that, I drifted back into the world and spent too much time on electrical devices and saved my own head, but I have no notifications on my phone and no social media accounts on my phone (I have recently deleted Strava again which is a toxic social media account).

So far it hasn’t affected my career and it certainly hasn’t affected negatively in my family life (much more positive).

I can’t really see the disadvantage.

If your business is built around social media, that’s a problem, but remember that many of the high level companies use very, very little social media indeed.

We need to be back to face to face conversations and particularly for our children to teach them the subtle differences between types of conversation and how to react in a proper society.
