"Most people overestimate what they can do in a day and underestimate what they can do in a month. We overestimate what we can do in a year, and underestimate what we can accomplish in a decade." by Matthew Kelly from the book The Long View.

The quote above is by Matthew Kelly. He's an author, coach and entrepreneur from Australia.

He also wrote The Velveteen Rabbit, which, interestingly, has come across my radar quite a lot of times over recent months, probably because it was made into an animated short by Apple TV and something that I might go and watch now that I've looked into this a bit further.

I was just searching for the quote about most people overestimating what they can do in a day and underestimating what they can do in a month because I'm struck by the fact that we all don't seem to reach the end of our to-do lists at the end of each day, with almost a disappointment and frustration and stress, not realising that all the little bits that add up over time make us much better a month from now or a year from now than we were today if the habits are in the right place.

Recently, I finished Atomic Habits by James Clear, which is a book that undermines the whole philosophy of this.

If you change something today, just a little thing, but do it again tomorrow and then the day after, it will compound all through 2024 and by the time you look back in 2025, you will be a lot better and much better off in relation to that little thing.

Imagine you were able to save £2 today and save £2 tomorrow; the money that you had when you got to January would be a total that you would not have had before that you could spend on absolutely anything you wanted.

Imagine you walk for 30 minutes today when you have never walked before, and you did that every day through 2024.

We rarely ever achieve things in the short term; we don't get rich quickly or become an overnight success. It takes months, years and decades, but they are all made up of days that we do not make everything on our list.
