Building connection

One of the great things about the Christmas holidays is the ability to see people that you don't see regularly and also the ability to catch up with people that you've always been meaning to catch up with.

And so, this demonstrates to us that one of the most important things we can do is connect with people and be human with people because in a world where more and more of our time is spent pushing away from connection, it seems to me that connection is one of the most valuable things we have.

I was reminded thinking about this of what happened when we had the big ‘GDPR Crisis’.

Remember when we were all told that we had to ask everybody that we knew whether they were happy to sign up or not or else we were going to go to jail and our houses were going to be burned down or something like that.

And, we had long discussions about the blog at that time, which had quite a lot of subscribers associated with it but obviously quite a lot of subscribers associated that never actually accessed it.

And so, we decided that we would ask people to voluntarily sign back on and to sign people off entirely and that reduced the amount of people on the blog by about 66% at that stage.

I remember thinking in my vein state, even though I pretend or say that the blog is all for me when I'm retired, that I was worried that nobody would be back again.

But the thing is that if you are about connection, then the only thing that's important is connection.

It might be that David Beckham has 300 million Instagram followers, but he doesn't have 300 million friends.

And of course, at that level I did ask and use that to get people's attention and to spam them and to show them things but at the level that we're at with things like this, it's never, ever big enough, and connection is the most important thing.

And so, this Christmas, when you're thinking about what you're going to do next at work, or how are you going to advance yourself in your career or make it better for your family or for yourself in the things you do, then remember that the biggest leverage you've got and the biggest way to make a difference is to try to start to connect.
