Brave in the long term

‘B’ is for brave in the values that we set and try to live by at the Clinic, which are encompassed by the phrase BE HERE.

Bravery is a choice. It's undertaking an action that you think is right when you have a choice and in spite of the fact that you would rather do something else.

This week, I've had to have several conversations that I would rather not have, which has required that I be brave and enter into the conversation.

I've written many times here about difficult conversations and the necessity for difficult conversations, and I've never been one to shirk away from that (even though this week I've felt like a piece of sh*t because I have the worst cold I can possibly remember on top of hypothyroidism).

But in looking at that and in thinking about that, it was essential to have the conversations that I had (at least three this week) where it would have been easier for me to pass them off or ask someone else to do it when even I understood that the most important thing I could do was to have them myself.

At the end of the week after having those conversations, I don't regret a single one, and in fact, they've all gone extraordinarily well (even though not necessarily easy).

It's hard to be brave. I think that's the point, and it's easy to be brave in the short-term and not brave in the long-term.

But I think bravery in the long-term is the hardest thing, because it's unlikely to get you gratification or recognition anytime soon and by the time you reach any stage where either of those two gifts are given to you, everyone's forgotten what you did in the first place.
