The world of work has changed (in case you hadn't noticed).
The opportunity to learn is endless and the opportunity to access free means of information is even more boundless than that.
As a result of this people are carving out careers in many and varied ways and taking routes that they would never have thought of and ending up in places that they could never have dreamt of.
My own career has been entirely atypical in it’s pathway, apart from the first couple of years.
When I figured out that I preferred to carve my own route, it felt like it became a whole lot easier to make the decisions for myself and take responsibility.
As I look around at people that I respect in my profession, many of those have taken an entirely atypical route to success.
Chatting to Matt Giudici in the practice recently (he was a high school student who came to us for work experience, who we supported through dental school and who is now doing his first year after qualification). We discussed the concept of atypical career pathways.
For Matt to get where he wants to go, there isn’t really a designated route.
For that reason it takes resilience and creativity to make your own route.
Perhaps it’s time for a change for you, if it is, perhaps it’s time to draw a map.
