An unlikely pilgrimage

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry is a beautiful story written by Rachel Joyce where Harold receives a letter one day from someone he knew when he was younger who was dying and walks out of his front door to post the return and walks from the south of England to Newcastle, unplanned, unassisted. It’s truly beautiful.

Today, my friend John and his wife Isobel start a pilgrimage of their own which, only a few short years ago would have seemed equally as unlikely as Harold’s.

In October 2019, John and Isobel’s son, Cameron, took his own life for reasons that no one can fathom or understand.

2 ½ years later John and Isobel begin to walk from Land’s End to John O’Groats to launch the Canmore Trust and to begin to raise funds to provide safe places for people in similar circumstances to Cameron and to assist families who’ve suffered in ways that they have suffered.

The route is 1,200 miles physically but mentally and psychologically it’s far longer and far tougher for the Gibson’s.

If you want to watch what I said about this on our video blog, you can watch it here.

Later on, this week we will release part 1 of a podcast that I’m doing with John as we follow him through his walk from at the start, the middle and the end.

I’ll link to the podcast when it’s available at the bottom of a blog later in the week as soon as it’s ready.

Mostly though I’d just like you to donate some money because the majority of people who are able to read this blog already have enough.

Empathy is where you put yourself in someone else’s shoes and if you can stop for a minute and imagine what it must have been like for the Gibson’s over the past 2 ½ years and you’d like to help other people who might end up in that situation through no fault or doing of their own then perhaps we should click the button and try to help a little bit.

Thank you!
