I used to write a review of a book each month and I stopped that the same way that I stopped writing about cinemas and music for all the wrong reasons. I was inspired to write a little bit more again when the book in the photo associated with this blog arrived through the door the other day.
If you put aside the fact that I am still ordering on Amazon (I must sort that out) the new ‘Dust’ series by Philip Pullman has been long awaited; certainly by me.
His Dark Materials trilogy was singular and without doubt the most important books I have ever read. A very personal thing but there is a moment, a passage in the third book which is probably the most important piece of writing I have ever come across and therefore the anticipated release of this trilogy which is associated with the first one has come at a great time for me.
If you haven’t read His Dark Materials trilogy I can’t recommend it enough and if you have and you didn’t realise his new book was out then you will want to get it.
Other stuff that I have been reading or listening to via audio book are Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari and the follow up Homo Deus, they’re both extraordinary books. The first one is to give a perspective of the length of history and the second one is to show what is possible and what is coming for our children and grandchildren. I read Admissions – a life in brain surgery by Henry Marsh, but I wouldn’t bother, it’s certainly not as good as the first one, almost a little bit of a sad follow up. Currently on audio book and for the next 60 hours or so I will be listening to the definitive Sherlock Holmes collection as read by Stephen Fry.
I have loved Sherlock Holmes since I was a boy and it’s one of those things where I thought I was the only one that liked it but for £7.99 (on Amazon again unfortunately) you can get 85 hours worth of listening which for me will last at least 2 months or more.
Finally in relation to my work, I am reading the Treatment Guide Vol 10 from the ITI in advance of our Aesthetic course. If you ever wanted a handbook of anterior aesthetic implants then that would be the one. For the business I listen to Good Strategy/Bad Strategy by Richard P Rumelt and as far as that subject is concerned I cannot recommend that enough.
