48 bog rolls

bog rolls

I asked Marie to post this on Christmas Day so if you’re reading it then… what the hell are you doing and why are you not with your family?!

Don’t worry, I’ll be reading Seth’s blog today any way.

I got Alison 48 bog rolls for Christmas and if you’ve followed the blog over the last little while you’ll understand that i’m beginning to get a reputation for  being the modern day reincarnation of Ebenezer Scrooge!

A few nights before I bought the boll rolls online I walked into the Co-Op around the corner from my house.

It takes about three minutes to walk there, it’s a brilliant little shop and the people that work there are wonderful. I hope it’s there forever.

I was queuing up in the aisles when I realised that everything stacked towards the front of the shop, I mean absolutely everything, was carbohydrate - glucose syrup based carbohydrate products.

Everything was sweet, everything was the work of the devil and everything was for the addict.

Everything was also reduced, so you could buy your own body weight in Dairy Milk chocolate for about 60p! It was quite a sight to behold.

It reinforced everything that’s wrong at this time of year because only two or three yards back from the carbohydrate extravaganza was the booze.

So, the whole of this little Co-Op shop is front loaded with carbs and booze.

It was not long after Alison’s birthday that this happened and I harped back to the fact that I had already bought her two boxes of chocolates for her birthday – a little box of white Lindt and a little box of red Lindt – not that we needed any chocolate in our house!

So, this is in my mind (because I’m in the Co-Op almost every day) and then Paula posted on the weirdo blog to say thanks, that it had touched a cord and how her 22-year-old daughter was now getting a little bit more eco-friendly and a little bit less hyper-consumerist.

What she did though was spread some ripples and she posted a link to www.whogivesacrap.org so I clicked it.

I didn’t know what I was going to find here but what I found was quite extraordinary. A group of guys who crowd funded a company set up to make sustainable, recycled toilet paper and donated 50% of their profits to make toilets for people who don’t have them.

Imagine that, imagine the difference they made by setting up that company.

Imagine.

I hadn’t bought Alison anything for Christmas so I ordered 48 rolls of toilet paper.

It cost £44 (£4 delivery) but you can subscribe if you want and they’ll send it regularly.

If you buy your toilet paper separately you might just think about toilet paper and how much you use and you might be able to use less. Imagine the difference that would make because something like 5 billion people in the world have a toilet.

It’s not even that. If you go on the website these guys are having a great time making a big difference and I wanted to share that with my family.

If you’re reading this at 6pm on Christmas Day or any time after then post me a comment. I’m not sure how the toilet paper will go down as a Christmas present but I’m happy to update you if anyone is interested!
