I read with interest in the news yesterday that the junior doctors have been given a 22.3% pay rise over two years.
I heard from a friend that NHS dentistry was to get a 6% pay rise or near enough to
I also remember all of the material that we present in our HR modules of the business course, which tells you that once you get to the right level of income, people stay for culture, leadership, and vision, nothing else.
It's pretty good science this, about 650,000 people surveyed anonymously as to why they would stay or leave a business, about how much they need to be paid and about over what level it doesn't really matter too much anymore if the culture or the leadership or the vision is lacking.
Hands up if you think NHS healthcare in the hospital service for junior doctors is going to have a considerably improved culture after the 22.3%.
Hands up if you think the 6% that goes to NHS dentists will improve the culture for the dentists and the therapists and the hygienists and the nurses and the dental technicians, many of whom are on their knees in the NHS sphere and really not keen to be there.
Throwing money in wages at a problem never fixes it.
Changing the culture, leadership, and vision is much more likely to be long-lasting, but I do not have much confidence that that is coming quickly.
