Continuing to bang my head against that wall

Tonight (Wednesday), actually right this minute, if you read this blog when it first publishes at 6 p.m., I will be doing an international webinar for the ITI on hot tips for dental marketing.

The title was suggested by the ITI to grab attention and get people to interact and engage. Everyone wants something hot; they wouldn't really want cold tips on dental marketing that probably wouldn't sell.

The point, though, is to briefly explain to people in 45 to 55 minutes the possibilities for dental marketing, and dental implant marketing in particular, because this is the ITI.

So, I will steal a range of material from our marketing genius, Tom Reason (I don't have a first-class honours degree in digital marketing, but Tom does), and try to show people what marketing can do in their practice.

The reason for this is to allow people to attract more patients to their practice, to allow them to treat more people, make more lives better, to generate more income from their business, and probably to develop their business and their personal lives and their life in general.

The truth here is that you can train as much as you like in clinical dentistry and be the most extraordinary clinician if you've had the practise, but it kind of all goes to waste if nobody comes to see you and nobody comes to see you if you're unable to tell people that you're actually there.

Modern marketing is an art and a science; it can be extraordinarily complicated, but it can also be extraordinarily simple, and some of the hints, tricks, and tips in this webinar are exactly like that.

The problem with this whole process is, though, that it would mean spending time on your business or your organisation or your career that was out with getting your crowns better, getting your implant surgery better, and being better at aligners. It would be spending time on your business, not in your business, and this is not a new concept.

Anyone who talks to people about the business of dentistry has been banging their head against that wall for years. Anyone who has the privilege of seeing someone who has the ability to step outside of the organisation and look back in to improve even the smallest part of it understands the advantage of this and the benefits of allowing people to take themselves to another place.

The hot tips and dental marketing Webinar, which has now had approximately 700 signups, is just a teaser, an introduction to The ITI Digital Dental Entrepreneurial program, which is designed specifically for dentists by dentists (us) to take you through a trip to building a plan in all aspects of your business and organisational management for the next three years.

You could assume that everyone already has one of these plans, but the truth is that 90% of businesses don't or certainly don't follow them.

And so, meeting up every six months for an away day in a hotel with tea and scones to decide what we're going to do next doesn't quite cut it.

Having a system in place to manage your business, like the system you have in place to manage your patients, is the best way to a contented, secure, and prosperous future.

It starts today.
