Everybody wants to be a hero nowadays, famous for five minutes.
Everyone wants to be on the telly getting a certificate for being great.
The truth is that the subtle job of saving lives is just that. It’s subtle.
Drip by drip, day by day, week by week, year by year.
You get tens of thousands of chances to save people’s lives throughout your own life but it’s just not dramatic and it doesn’t make the news.
It’s moments of kindness, saying hello or being there for someone when times are tough.
It’s being what you say you are, being genuine and sticking your neck out at the right time to stand up for what is right.
In those thousands of interactions, you might never save someone’s life. You might never pull them back from the front of a speeding car or from the brink of suicide.
But you might help someone else who does.
You’ll never get the glory, you’ll never get the certificate and you’ll never get to perform on X Factor.
But you might have done something wonderful, one of the most wonderful things of all. Just because you don’t get noticed doesn’t mean it wasn’t good.
