The moments in between things

Written by Colin Campbell | 27/06/21 17:00

I worked from home on Wednesday for the first proper work from home session that I’ve had for the longest time that I can remember, due to both the circumstances that have changed in the world and the circumstances that have changed in my family.

I was listening to Spirit by The Waterboys on one of the playlist that I have from a long time ago.

The YouTube video is here with the words, you should watch it.

I went from Spirit by The Waterboys to The Fisherman's Blues as I was doing work and listening to things but it took me back to places from a long time ago which made me smile and helped me work away.

Sometimes the moments in between the things that we do are where all the wonder and the value is.

As I was trying to get my thoughts together to write down this little piece, I turned around and behind me on the wall is a calendar with a picture of my home town.

It was another one of those moments in between the things that you do which take you back to the memories of times gone by, that make you smile and make you happy and make you think that what you’re doing now is worth the while.

As you get older, I think these moments become more important, when you’re younger you make the moments and as you get older you make less of the moments (sadly) but reflect upon the ones that you’ve made.

Perhaps that’s what they call wisdom, perhaps wisdom is quite sad.

In the chase to be more efficient and more effective and to use our time to greater value and with greater leverage, we lose the opportunity for these moments because we’re scheduled and we’re measured by how many things we ‘get done’.

As much as I can I cycle to work (not enough). Carl who works with me walks to work through the forest. We’re both of a similar age (he’s younger than me) but both of these things help us to understand that the moments in between the things that we do are equally as important or perhaps much more important than many of the things that we actually do.
