Stretch and contract

If you're a freestyle climber and you stretch too far, you fall and you die, for the rest of us, not so much.

In the comfort crisis that we live in, what we seem to seek is to be comfortable, not uncomfortable, but progress only comes from being uncomfortable.

Progress in the gym only comes if you accept the pain a day or two later. Progress on the bike only comes if you accept the pain right now as you try to get up the hill, and the pain later. Progress in your work only comes if you accept that it will knock you off your schedule, or you'll become busy, or it will be difficult, or it will keep the stress of something that might not work. Progress in running your business comes when you understand that nothing ever stays the same, and events happen all the time.

Understanding that what we do is stretch until we go too far (and not die) and then contract a little bit. Trying to create the stretch, which is a little further each time and a contraction, which is a little less each time.

This is a long-term process to better something that's not very fashionable these days, in a world where we're supposed to have it all now, be successful now, make all the money now and then be comfortable for the rest of our lives.

It's a myth, and it's toxic, and it's not one we should be encouraging anyone to dial into.
