The general cultural meme, the way society defines success is that we're always moving forwards, always growing, always stretching, always stressing.
I have, as much as anyone, been subject to this and been pulled in by this and along by this for the longest time.
But there is another potential explanation, another situation, another way to be.
If you subscribe to the long game and you are about longevity then much of the progress you make, is just by being here, day after day, week after week and month after month.
Next year I'm 30 years qualified and I'm now in a situation where so many of the people in my cohort and the people who were around me at that time are starting to ‘get out’.
I'm not becoming tangibly more valuable, I'm just still here and being here becomes more valuable day after day, week after week, month after month and ultimately year after year.
It's not because I'm better, it's only because I'm hanging around.
Sometimes the best progress you make is just by staying where you are.
