Stand for something..

Every year, at the start of the London Marathon, someone goes off quickly, right off the front.

They run at a pace that they would never be able to sustain for a mile, let alone 26, so they can be on the telly, on the newspaper front cover, or be famous for a second.

Lots of people think that is the purpose of being what Andy Warhol said was "Everyone will be famous for five minutes".

Lots of people now seem to think that is the meaning of life, that they have to be at the front to be heard, to be important, to be the voice of reason, but that's not how sh*t gets done.

Sh*t gets done when you stand for something; as Public Enemy taught us, "If you don't stand for something, you fall for anything".

The London Marathon is really successful because tens of thousands of people do it year on year and create an enormous spectacle.

Every runner is just a drop in the ocean; if they don't turn up, it makes no difference, but if they all don't turn up, it doesn't exist.

The person who's off at the front at the start, like a total sideshow, is forgotten faster than they started running.

But you can apply this right across society, can't you?

We can't make a difference to things that are happening individually; it's not possible, and we'll never get credit for it on the telly or in the newspaper or an OBE or MBE or badge or title.

We'll never make any difference, but if we all think that, we'll never, ever make a difference.

If you don't stand up for what you believe in, someone else will.

If you don't have a voice, someone else will shout over the top of you.

You don't have to throw things or fire things; you just have to stand.
