A genuine apology is one of the most powerful and generous things that it is possible to give to someone else.
It is an expression of care and empathy beyond that of almost anything else.
The ability to look someone in the face and tell them that you are sorry for what has happened or for anything that you may have done, which has led to a situation for them that was distressing and upsetting.
The thing is, though, that people now seem to want to apologise with a but
It's not enough just to say "I'm sorry for what has happened" or "I'm sorry if what I have done has caused this".
Many people now seem to want to say, "Sorry, but actually, you made me do that because you did this", or "Sorry, but it wasn't really my fault because of this".
"Sorry" is extraordinarily powerful and wonderful.
"Sorry, but…" is the opposite.
