Practical Politics

Written by Colin Campbell | 28/10/23 17:00

It's everywhere politics.

It's on the front page of my digital newspaper.

It's on every podcast that you listen to.

It's in your marriage.

It's in your parenting.

It's in your relationships with your workforce or the people you're working on a project with.

It's hard because there are so many viewpoints, and everybody is the most important person in the world (in relation to their own narrative).

It's why the values you have are essential, but even more essential than that is the ability to stay the course with the values that you have.

When you find yourself in a group of people or a circumstance or a crisis where the views are different and the perspectives at odds with each other, the only chance you have to reach a situation of contentment and equilibrium is to stick to the values that you have and to do the right thing.

The problem comes when your values are weak or in the wrong direction or when you say one thing in one place and entirely contradict it in another.

I was always of the opinion that if I'm honest with my patients about what I see, I'm unlikely to fall down, and I never need to remember what I say.

All I need to remember is that the next time I see the patient is to be as honest as I was the last time.

I think politics, relationships, they're pretty much the same.

Not having to remember every single thing or cast up every conversation, just sticking to the values that you have solidly built and knowing that whatever happens in the end, when you close your eyes, you'll still be able to get to sleep.
