Never getting bored

Today marked the start of another Year One Implant cohort at The Campbell Academy, teaching 16 people how to provide straightforward implant dentistry and go to 50 implants a year and then 100 and then 200, and then beyond.

For many, it's the start of 30 or 40 years of implant dentistry in their life, and it is one of the most exciting and, essential and important things we can do.

When I was at work on Tuesday, I saw three patients in the morning and one late in the afternoon, the 16 people that I talked to today will treat literally hundreds and hundreds of thousands of patients throughout their careers.

If we can influence that in any tiny way, we can make such an enormous difference.

The trick is never to get bored.

The trick is to understand that even though you're talking to a group about a subject that you've talked to many groups about (the slides are always different, and the chat is still different), it's an entirely different group of people with an entirely different dynamic and an entirely different set of needs.

One of the things we show the guys when we start is a laminate with nothing on it, a piece of A4 paper that I have laminated. This usually sits on my notice board, and I then bring it out to show them the recipe for the rest of their careers.

It's up to them to write it, not up to me.

We can show them the way a little bit, but today is the first day of the rest of their lives for the group of 16 people.

I will never get bored of that.
