January, and this time in January is always about the money.
It's about what we've done in the last year and what we hope to do in the next year, it's about how much we've got and how much we haven't, how much we have to spend on other things and how much we shouldn't.
To be clear, and as it has been noted many times in these pages, I'm not a money guy, don't really like it, don't really like dealing with it, but I've made it an absolute priority to have a handle on it for my business, at least at the highest level, because it's essential and it's actually irresponsible if I don't.
I would suggest you do the same.
If you're trying to run a business and you think you're not in the money business, then you're deluded, and now more than ever, you're likely to get into difficulty.
It's like Woody Allen said (not exactly sure where, but he did say it), only he described it in relation to sex.
“Money is 10% of a good business and 90% of a bad business”.
That's how it goes. When the business is run well, the money doesn't really matter, and the governance is good, the accounting is good, and the reporting is good. It's good.
When it's not when you drop the ball, it becomes the biggest thing in your job.
That's not the best place to be.
