Know your worth

I used to work with a brilliant surgeon who had several little hacks for life.

Brilliant he was, but ‘quite a character’, and that's not necessarily a compliment.

One of the things he would repeatedly tell us, though, was to know your worth. What he meant by that (which he explains repeatedly) was to know it up here and know it down there.

You're not too valuable, and you're not worthless. You're somewhere in the middle.

Understanding where your position is and what your value is is really critical.

I used to think that was because people undervalued themselves too much (I think I certainly did). Nowadays, I think it's in the other direction.

I heard a fascinating story the other day from a friend of mine who books lots of people to speak for quite a prestigious organisation.

He decided to book a couple of different people who are now seen as ‘young influencers’ in the world of implant dentistry.

They were booked to speak all day to a prestigious group, but it turned out that it became obvious after about 90 minutes that they'd run out of material.

One of them spent a considerable period of time talking about ice baths and red light therapy in a day for general dental practitioners on implant dentistry.

Careful now.

Know your worth.

Not too high with the highs, and not too low with the lows, but you never know who's watching, and there's always someone better than you.
