“It’s your fault”

The default reaction when the door shuts behind the pair of you and you’re both locked out for hours and hours.

It’s instinctive. It’s seems to feel better to pin the blame of the situation on someone else but it’s very unlikely that that will resolve the immediate problem that you find yourself in.

I think most businesses and organisations are built nowadays on the “it’s your fault” philosophy. This is good because it instills a culture of fear where people are less likely to push their limits and stretch their boundaries – it’s safer. Safer of course is not the point, better is the point.

Perhaps, when the door clicks shut behind you and you look at each other and realise the situation you’re in, the question is “what can we do to sort this out?”

Much more constructive than shouting at each other for the next 15 minutes before you realise it needs to be sorted out.
