Idol back stories

Written by Colin Campbell | 19/07/22 17:00

When I meet someone that I think I might respect, I’m very interested to know where they’ve come from.

It’s like a little study that I’m running over the years to see if there’s any consistent traits or experiences that run through groups of people who I think are positive influencers in the world.

There is a pattern developing.

Almost all the people who I respect and who influence me and inspire me to try to be a better person and a better version of myself have a back story which is entirely different to the current story of their life.

They’ve travelled, they’ve worked in totally different jobs (often much lower down the social ladder than they currently occupy) and they’ve taken risks and changed their path as circumstances dictated.

It’s probably why we like the biographies of sports people because we can sometimes draw a parallel with our own lives and think that we could also aspire to be better.

Perhaps understanding these stories makes it better, makes us better parents or gives us a better chance to guide our children towards the values that we think might be important to save the world.
