Colberts trees

I honestly thought I'd written about this some years ago, but a quick search on Perplexity indicated that I hadn't, and so if Perplexity can't find it, I guess you can't either.

When is the best time to plant a tree?

The metaphor for this is easy, it's Colbert, who was the prime minister for France in the advance of an impending naval attack by the English Armada.

He spoke to his senior commanders in the military and explained to them that they needed at least another 100 ships in order to repel the English Armada. His commanders quickly explained to him that it would take 100 years to grow the trees high enough for the masts for 100 ships, and Colbert's response was, "Well, we had better start now".

I think I found the line for another sign in the practice to go with 'not today' and the plaque in honour of my father-in-law, and the quote wall and the Wall of Fame and Game face (all of which we have already).

I think we should all plant a tree every single day. Some will wither, and some will die, and some will flourish (maybe only a few), but I tell you what, this time next year, or in 10 years, or 100, we'll wish we started now.
