The thing about climbing the ladder to try to get to the top of society is that there is little point if there is no society left when you get to the top.
Understanding that you are a custodian of the system that allowed you to move forwards in the way that you do then clears the way for you to pass it on to the people that come behind in a better state than when you found it.
Not much point in getting to the top of the tree if you had to burn the tree to get there.
