Careful what you wish for…

I met a patient the other day, another patient who had won.

Everybody's searching for a ticket to Easy Street.

This patient had a ticket to Easy Street.

She was in her mid-thirties, no longer working, and living the life.

After she saw me, she was going back to sunbathe with her dog; she said that after she'd made the money that she'd made, she was looking for other investment opportunities later but didn't know she would find any.

We chatted for a long time (about dentistry, too), and then she left.

Initially, I was left with the feeling of thinking, 'Oh my God, that would be amazing,' and then I realised that I could have that if I wanted and then realised that I didn't want it.

There was a video on YouTube by Alan Watts called 'If you could dream any dream you wanted'. He describes in this what it would be like when you've dreamed any dream about how your life would be perfect. Then you would have a few days of perfect or a few weeks. Then you would push the envelope and try to make it less perfect, taking more risks, and you would push and push until, finally, you arrive back exactly where you started, right here, not knowing what the future holds, not knowing what might happen tomorrow.

I don't wish for that.

Giving up work now would be a slow death for me, but it would just happen too quickly. That's the problem.

I think I'll stick with what I've got.
