Perhaps the worst word in the English language?
Two scenarios where it's not helpful.
1) Yes…but.
In effect, what that means is that I don't agree; it means 'no, I don't agree'. The best way to counteract a 'yes… but' is to stop before it comes out of your mouth and think, what if?
Someone taught me this years ago, I can't remember where.
I am a horrible 'yes butter', especially to Alison, but I learned to stop for a minute and think, what if that thing she is suggesting is the right idea, and almost always it is.
2) Sorry, but.
That is never an apology, never in its life has it been an apology.
And so, for the avoidance of doubt, this is how you apologise – 'sorry'.
